Review: The Lost Book of the White by Cassandra Clare and Wesley Chu

The Lost Book of the White is a follow up to The Red Scrolls of Magic, it is a sequel to the events of the book, but it takes place much later. I think Red Scrolls of Magic takes place during City of Fallen Angles, and this book takes place pre-Lady Midnight and post-Heavenly Fire. This book probably benefits from knowledge of The Shadowhunter Chronicles general timeline, but everything important to the plot or character information is contextualized in the book.

This book does the wonderful thing that only very long series can do; it makes you feel like you are reuniting with old friends; it is always a joyous and nostalgic feeling.

This is not to imply that the book does not add to the world; it absolutely did! The world was expanded, we got new character and world information, I would guess some of this is hinting at events of the final series, and we are just getting to spend more time with some foundational members of this world. I love this aspect of this series!

I did think that this book at times got a bit muddled with whose POV we were reading from, it was not frequent, but occasionally I flipped back a page or two to remember who is talking to me at the moment. I also felt like some of the plot reveals towards the 3/4 mark were a bit rushed. I wanted to spend a little more time understanding the villains' logic or at least spend more time feeling like they were a threat, especially because you know that everything ends up fine. I wanted more angst, I guess.
Overall did really enjoy this book! It adds value to the series, it is fun, and I am firmly entrenched in this world. Here for all of it.

I gave this book 4 stars on Goodreads and The StoryGraph! I recommend this series to all people invested in the Shadowhunter world!
